The colour of

In this project, I focused on my favorite color: black. Growing up, I viewed black as a sad and somber color, often associated with death. In my cultural setting, black was reserved for specific contexts, such as funerals, or worn by alternative people. Because of these associations, I rarely wore black in my own life. However, as I grew older, I began to question these "social rules" and discovered that black holds far more nuanced meanings across different cultures and contexts.
Black is not just a color of mourning—it can represent elegance, power, mystery, and even transformation. To explore this, I linked my research to the symbolic meaning of the bat. Often misunderstood and feared, the bat is an animal deeply connected to the color black. In many cultures, it symbolizes both death and rebirth, embodying the cyclical nature of life. This duality resonated with me and became central to my project.
To express these ideas, I created a visual representation of a life cycle. This piece illustrates my interpretation of the color black, moving through phases of death, transformation, and renewal. By combining symbolic imagery with cultural references, I aimed to challenge preconceived notions about black and offer a broader perspective on its significance.
This project invites viewers to reconsider the color black—not as a singularly somber hue, but as a versatile and meaningful element of human expression. It’s a reminder that even what is feared or misunderstood, like the bat, can carry profound and beautiful symbolism, transforming the way we see the world.
